dysexia , surviving and thriving
Our son had been at school for at least 3 years and almost everyday we had a real struggle to get him to school. He would get up in the morning and say to me “Is it school day today Mum?” and I would obviously say "yes" and he would reply "I’m not going". I used to really dread the mornings!
My husband would put him on the bus screaming. The bus driver use to say "you put him on and I will close the door quickly". I used to often ring the school to see that he was ok.
We just thought he didn’t like school as he loved being at home helping on the farm. He didn’t really enjoy kindie either.
In year 4 we went to his goal setting session at the beginning of the year. We found out he was reading at a 5 year old level. At this stage I was feeling really sorry for him. No wonder he had hated school so much. He just couldn’t do school like everybody else. Reading English was like a foreign language to him. I walked out of there knowing we had to immediately do something for him while we still could.
We made an appointment at the Learning Staircase. I took him in to their centre and they carried out a comprehensive 3 hour test. We found out that he has severe dyslexia.
We have seen a vast improvements, both with him wanting to go to school and with his learning.
We have found that there is no magic cure, just lots of hard work by the child teacher and parents.
